Corona del Mar High senior Shaun Mohler, the Daily Pilot’s Newport-Mesa Defensive Player of the Year, tops three Back Bay standouts named to represent the South in the Orange County All-Star football game.

Newport Harbor High senior Charles Schultz and Corona del Mar senior Matt Burgner, have also been chosen to compete against the top players from the North, July 14 at Orange Coast College.

Mohler, an inside linebacker who also played quarterback, running back and receiver, made 113 tackles to help the Sea Kings finish 6-6 and earn their first CIF Southern Section playoff victory since 1995.

Mohler, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder, earned All-CIF Division IX recognition and was named first-team All-Southern Section (all divisions).

Burgner, who will continue his career a Georgetown University, was a two-time All-CIF performer.

Burgner, a 6-0, 225-pound defensive end who also played fullback, had 12 sacks last fall to give him 36 for his three-year varsity career, a school record.

Schultz, a 6-4, 332-pound offensive tackle, anchored a strong blocking wall for the Sailors, who won the CIF Division VI title and finished 11-3.

Schultz, who plans to play next season at Orange Coast College, also earned All-CIF Division VI recognition.

Both Schultz and Burgner were twice named to the Daily Pilot Dream Team.

Other notable players named to represent the South, which will be guided by Laguna Hills Coach Bruce Ingalls, are Mission Viejo running back Shane Moline, Dana Hills offensive star Grant Schwartz and quarterbacks Brian Schrock (Edison) and Mike Cook (San Clemente).

The North will be coached by Pacifica’s Guy Gardner.

The 47th edition of the annual summer showcase is sponsored by the Orange County Youth Foundation, a division of the Brea Lions Club.
