LIONS SEEK BABIES AND BEAUTIES

The Harbor Mesa and Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Clubs are co-sponsoring two contests at the annual Lions Fish Fry on June 3 and 4 in Lions Park.

The Miss Costa Mesa Beauty and Scholarship Contest, chaired by Harbor Mesa Lions member Arlene Schafer, will take place at 2 p.m. on June 3. Dave Snowden, police chief of Beverly Hills and former police chief of Costa Mesa, will serve as emcee. Contestants must be between 16 to 25 and live, work or attend school in Costa Mesa.

The Baby Contest, chaired by Harbor Mesa Lions member Sandi Scheafer, will take place on June 4, with two age divisions, 6 to 12 months and 13 to 24 months.

EXCHANGE CLUB HONORS STUDENTS

The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor honored outstanding students Kirsten Miller and Ian Lamb of Estancia High; Hilary Vallejo, Harrison Brown and Hongan Nguyen of Newport Harbor; and Ken and Stephanie Wong of Corona del Mar. Parents and school counselors joined them at a luncheon meeting. Club member Charlie Anderson said, “After meeting these kids, the future looks OK.”

ROTARY TRACK MEET

The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa sponsored the city of Newport Beach track meet on April 21.

Chairman Art Walton recruited Marc Aarons, Dick Carrol, Greg Collard, Victor Currie, Dick Dickson, Roger Gilbert, Frank Gruver, Julianne Hagan, Bill Hossfeld, Linda Klevatt, Sidney Klevatt, Roger McGonegal, Nan Raney, Karl Romero, Terry Rousselot, Bob Silver, Peter Smith, Steve Speer, Nate White and Bob and Linda Wood to work the meet for grade school and junior high students.

Winners of the track-and-field competition will return with their parents on May 17 to receive their awards at a dinner hosted by the Rotary Club at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.

ROTARY CLUB DONATIONS

The Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise presented checks to Teen Challenge and the Family Violence Project at Tuesday’s meeting. According to Mary Cockley, the Rotary Club has been supporting Teen Challenge for a number of years. President Chris Szechenyi presented a check to the group’s Jerry Chirpka.

Pam Iles, a Superior Court judge in Laguna Niguel, was on hand to receive a check from Szechenyi. Iles is founder of the Family Violence Project, which works to prevent teen dating violence.

STUDENT SPEAKER

Arielle Little of Newport Harbor High will be competing in the District 4-L4 Student Speaker’s Contest. She is sponsored by the Harbor Mesa Lions Club and has won on the club, zone and regional levels. The topic of the speeches this year is, “The Internet, hero or villain?”

The winner of the district contest will go on to compete in the multiple district contest, with the finalist earning winnings of up to $20,000 in scholarship awards. The contest will be held in conjunction with the final District 4-L4 membership and cabinet meeting for the 2005-06 year, which starts at 10 a.m. April 29 at the Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club.

SAY YES TO ROMAN FEAST

The 33rd annual Roman Feast and Charity Auction benefiting the Youth Employment Service of the Harbor Area will be held on June 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center. Being honored during the dinner will be the National Water Research Institute and the late Ronald B. Linsky, who died last year.

Youth Employment Service of the Harbor Area is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to teaching youth ages 14 to 22 the skills and attitudes needed to get and keep a job. For more information or to donate an auction item, call Christine Carr at (949) 642-8306.
