GIRLS’ UNDER-10

Purple People Eaters vs. Costa Mesa: The Purple People Eaters played a tremendous game Saturday.

Veronica Varol scored the first goal with an assist from Sterling Brown, who played great offense. Marissa Fink came close to scoring with five shots on goal, and Ella McFadin and Nicole Lloyd controlled the midfield.

Ally Hadfield and Lauren Castleton each played goalie and used their skill and speed to dominate when they were on offense. Allison Bennett and Jaclyn Martin completed some big passes and Brittany Nielsen played a strong defensive game.

GIRLS’ UNDER-12

GOLD ALL-STARS

Newport Beach 6, Costa Mesa Predators 2: In a makeup game, Newport Beach scored two goals in the first quarter. Costa Mesa fought back in the second quarter, despite having only 10 players on the field, as Lauren Peterson and Sarah Bramlett tallied goals to tie the score, 2-2.

Zuleyma Guzman, Valeria Martinez and Cindy Mejia took several shots on goal, but Newport held them off. In the third quarter, Newport Beach scored three times, despite the tough defense of Grecia Zarate, Val Hernandez, Brenda Perez, midfielder Leslie Alvarran and goalie Marisa Flasco. In the fourth quarter, Newport scored once more.

Costa Mesa Predators 5, South Irvine A 0: Goalie Marisa Flasco, helped by the defense of Grecia Zarate, Sydney Caffey and Valeria Martinez, posted a shutout for Costa Mesa.

The Predators scored first with a corner kick by Sarah Bramlett to Zuleyma Guzman. In the second quarter, Lauren Peterson scored off a pass from Brenda Perez. Peterson scored again in the third quarter on Shonny McConnell’s assist.

Peterson made it three goals in the fourth with an assist from Guzman and great passing from Cindy Mejia and the rest of her teammates. Guzman capped it off with another goal, ending the fourth shutout of the season for the Predators.

GIRLS’ UNDER-10

SPRING SELECT

Costa Mesa Chaos 4, Corona Del Mar 1: The Chaos had their hands full with a tough Corona Del Mar team, which took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter. It was the first goal given up by the Chaos through four games.

Costa Mesa came back to tie on a goal by Jacqueline Hubbard just before halftime. Steffani Nava added a goal in the third quarter and Hubbard added two more goals.

Elaine Moya and Jayme Krohnfeldt continued their excellent goalkeeping, helped by another strong defensive effort by Marlene Calderon, Claudia Huerta and Amy Heil. The midfield of Emily Gruber, Albamaria Barrios and Hubbard took control in the second half with strong support from forwards Cristina Tuer, Julyana Bello and Nava.

GIRLS’ UNDER-12

SPRING SELECT

Newport Beach 6, Costa Mesa 2: Newport Beach defeated a strong and previously unbeaten Costa Mesa team in Area Q play.

Bailey McDaniel opened the scoring early in the first quarter with an assist from Allie Pantoskey. Claire Castillo scored minutes later to give Newport a 2-0 advantage.

Costa Mesa scored twice in the second quarter to tie the score, 2-2, at the half.

Newport came on strong in the second half with goals by Karli Leal, Sophie Evans and two by Courtney McIntosh for the 6-2 victory. Madison Grant, Holly Patrick and Megan Bathen assisted on the second half goals.

Jenna Castillo and Lauren Clemence controlled the center of the field from their midfield positions, while Carly Sorensen and Gracie Bebeau shut down the opponents.

GIRLS’ UNDER-10

E-Lemonators vs Pink Panthers: Forward Ashley Harris found the net once again this week, with the assists going to Cortlynn Clement and Cleo Harrington. “Sour Power” awards were given to Vanessa Fleming, Izzy Islava and Abby Bullock for their unselfish team play. Rebekah Foster played outstanding in the goal, while Kailen Locke, Samantha Rossi and Hailey Oberst played solid defense.

Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. The Dominators: The Red Hot Chili Peppers played a hard fought game. The Chili Peppers’ only goal was scored by Katie Conway, who also played well in goal. Olivia Muscatello and Kenya Avila played aggressively, both as forwards and as goalies.

Isabel Leveque played relentless midfield and also played a quarter in goal. Samantha Schroff led the defense with exceptional support from Emily Garcia, Kara Carlson and Lauren Walker. Emma Erickson split her time and talent between forward and midfield along with the always-hustling Madison Miners.

GIRLS’ UNDER-8

Green Dragons vs. Flower Power: The Green Dragons put on an impressive passing display. Yasmine Gomez scored twice, once off a great centering pass from Julia Ackerman. Destry Comp added a Dragon goal in the closing minutes of the game.

Flower Power’s offense was turned back by some big kicks and scrappy defense from Siena Amoroso, Caylee Talbot and Kathyrn Arblaster. Paula Pedrani, Katrina Heil, Isabel Jeremias and Alexia Hipsher dribbled and passed masterfully as they moved the ball upfield for the Dragons.

BOYS’ UNDER-8

Yellow Rattlesnakes vs. Stingers: The game was dominated in the midfield by the strong play of Baer Lanfried, who just got back from surgery but provided an endless amount of energy. This intensity was matched by Ben Hammond, who facilitated many scoring opportunities. Jerome Higman capitalized on the strong midfield play with a goal, but several of his other chances were thwarted. Simon Drakeford played his always-steady defense.

BOYS’ UNDER-5

White Tigers vs. Dragons: The teams played a skillful game, given their age. Ryan Pardini scored goals and played stellar defense as the teams battled back and forth. Donovan Crook helped stabilize the midfield with his strong play and Mark Sanchez had a goal and an assist. Brandon Figueroa scored an amazing goal from midfield to end the game.

BOYS’ EIGHTH-GRADE

ALL-NET DIVISION

Newport-Mesa Rippers 69, La Habra Bulldogs 58: The Rippers opened the spring season with a strong win. Cecil Whiteside paced the team with 23 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks, while Gabe Gomez added 18 points and five rebounds.

The Rippers closed the game playing strong defense and were led in the paint by Michael Borchard, Wes Shaw, Wes Woods and Jackson O’Connor ? who combined for 17 points and 22 rebounds. Trevor Davis, Angel Beas and Luke Christiano ran the offense with precision and combined for 14 points, seven assists and four steals.

Huntington Beach Hawks 56, Newport-Mesa Rippers 47: The Rippers kept the game close throughout, leading by five in the final quarter, but could not hit any shots down the stretch. Cecil Whiteside again paced the Rippers with 18 points, 12 rebounds and three assists, while Michael Borchard added seven points and six rebounds. Wes Woods and Jackson O’Connor played tough in the post.

TRACK AND FIELD

CORONA DEL MAR

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Corona del Mar 217, Sowers 204, Ensign 157: Corona del Mar won its first meet of the middle school track season. The team ? coached by Linda Craig, Chris Brudy and Nadine Turner ? received stellar performances from eighth-graders Alex Swigert and Sarah Keddington, who each won their individual runs and anchored the winning relay teams. Swigert also won the boys’ long jump with a leap of 18 feet, and Keddington was second in the eighth-grade girls’ long jump with a distance of 12 feet, 3 inches.

For the seventh graders, Sarah Craig won the 400 and 800 meters with sizzling times of 1 minute, 5.7 seconds and 2:49.8, respectively. She also jumped 4-0 to take second in the high jump.

Among the other winning performances were Michael Parishaian (eight-grade boys’ shot put, 34-10), Crystal Corrales (eighth-grade girls’ shot put, 24-6), Zachary Morton (seventh-grade boys’ high jump, 4-8), McKenzie Brown (seventh-grade girls’ high jump, 4-2), Kayla Marolt (seventh-grade girls’ long jump, 13-0), Malayna Kelly (5-4 girls’ division 400 meters, 1:13.6), Joel Ishii (seventh-grade boys’ 800, 2:38.8), Allie Garrett (eight-grade girls’ 800, 2:58.9) and Evan Dean (seventh-grade boys’ mile, 5:35).

Morton also took second in the 100 and third in the 200 for Corona del Mar. Marolt was second in the girls’ 5-4 division in both the 100 and 200 meters, and Dean placed second in the seventh-grade boys’ high jump and third in the shot put.
