Gaytan-Leach out in Ojai semis

OJAI ? Corona del Mar’s Cierra Gaytan-Leach lost in the girls’ 16 singles semifinals at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament on Saturday, eliminating the Newport-Mesa contingent there.

Gaytan-Leach was defeated by Santa Barbara’s Jordan Dockendorf in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (5). She had previously defeated Long Beach’s Jovanna Sangria in the quarterfinals (6-4, 6-2), Elise Leizerovich of Thousand Oaks (6-4, 6-0) and Costa Mesa’s Alexandra McIntosh (6-1, 6-1).

McIntosh had defeated Alexandra Heaslet of Woodland Hills, 6-0, 6-2, in her first match.

The area’s other semifinalist was Newport Beach’s Jillian Braverman in the girls’ 18 singles bracket. Braverman lost to Burbank’s Marianna Khachatryan, 6-4, 6-4, after scoring victories over Anaheim’s Rachael Miller (6-0, 6-1), Laguna Niguel’s Brooke Pletcher (6-1, 6-0), and Ojai’s Tanya Raykova (6-4, 7-6).

Hailey Hogan of Newport Beach advanced to the girls’ 14 singles quarterfinals, defeating Santa Barbara’s Hanna Grokenberger (6-0, 6-2), and Marie Zalameda of Los Angeles (6-3, 6-1) along the way. Hogan was defeated by Ontario’s Britney Sanders, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Corona del Mar High’s Fabian Matthews lost in the round of 16 in the boys’ 18 CIF singles division to Helix Charter’s Waylon Mobley, 6-1, 6-3. Matthews had previously defeated Pacifica Christian’s Alex Brigham (3-6, 6-4, 6-0) and Moorpark’s Drew Jacobs (6-2, 6-1).

Joseph DiGiulio of Newport Beach lost to Manhattan Beach’s Gregory Scott in the boys’ 14 singles round of 16, 6-3, 6-2. DiGiulio won his first match, 6-0, 6-0, over Mike Freesh of Chatsworth.

Newport Beach’s Ali Walters won her first match in girls’ 16 singles, defeating La Jolla’s Hannah Holladay, 6-2, 6-3, but defaulted her round of 16 match against Van Nuys’ Haley Hinkle.

In the girls’ 18 singles division, Newport Beach’s Carly Adams lost in the first round to Upland’s Juliann Tang, 6-1, 6-0.

Newport Harbor’s Brandon Chase and John Hutchinson reached the round of 32 in boys’ 18 CIF doubles. The pair knocked off Garden Grove’s Randy Ignacio and Long Nguyen, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, before losing to Dana Hills’ Taran Sondhu and Cameron Spearman, 6-0, 6-0.

Corona del Mar’s Dustin Hladek and Jonathan Kroopf met a similar fate, losing to University’s Michael Tang and Nicolas Vaccari, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The pair had beaten John Miller and Alex Nichols of Bakersfield Christian, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in the first round.

Jeff Thomsen of Newport Beach won two matches in the qualifier to make the men’s open draw singles bracket, where he lost to No. 5 seed Noah Newman of Beverly Hills, 6-4, 7-5.
