ROLLER HOCKEY

ENSIGN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Ensign won the Junior High championship with a 5-4 win over Sierra Vista at the Irvine Roller Hockey Center.

Brett Olinger opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 30 seconds into the game. Ryan Iverson extended the scoring with a natural hat trick off assists from Olinger, Justin Peters and Lucas Gagnon. Peters rounded out the scoring with a goal midway through the third period off an assist from Tony Nasca.

Other players contributing to the win were Gunner Everett, and Taylor and Trevor Hensley. Netminder Joey Schuster stopped 25 shots on goal.

MAJOR DIVISION

White Sox 8, Devil Rays 2: A pair of home runs helped lift the White Sox to a victory.

Run-scoring singles by Austin McCardle and Gerritt Stukkie and an RBI double from Tom Werdel gave the White Sox a 3-0 lead. Frankie Fardlow hit a two-run homer in the third inning after Trace Cruet doubled. In the fourth inning, Werdel and Cruet singled ahead of McCardle’s double for two more runs, and Cruet homered in the sixth inning.

Jeremy Peak struck out four in four innings for the White Sox, with Werdel fanning three in two innings of relief.

For the Devil Rays, Martin Myszynski had an RBI single and Logan Benter doubled in another run in the fourth inning. Ryan Webber, Benter and Myszynski combined to strike out eight batters.

Costa Mesa Angels 8, Westminster Twins 5: Tyler Sheffner, JT McLuckey, Tyler Taorima and Anthony Dean each homered in the first inning for the Angels.

Sheffner had three hits and two RBIs, McLuckey added three hits and four RBIs, Taorima had three hits and Dean had two hits and an RBI.

Taorima, playing center field, also threw out a runner at third base. Sheffner closed out the win by striking out five of the nine batters he faced.

Angels 7, White Sox 6: The Angels (7-4) broke open a close game with five runs in the third inning, including Cody Hanify’s two-run single to bringing Anthony Dean and Garrett Prather.

The White Sox scored four runs in the fourth inning, as Tom Werdel, Trace Curet, Frankie Fardlow and Erik Kjos each singled and later scored. Dean stopped the outburst with two strikeouts to end the inning.

Sheffner hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth that proved to be the game-winner.

The Angels defense was anchored by catcher Tyler Taormina and first baseman Garrett Prather. Second baseman Brendon Bonghanoy made three putouts at second, JT McLuckey had four putouts at shortstop and Jack Bunker made a great catch in left field.

MAJOR DIVISION

Angels 7, Giants 2: The Angels jumped to a 3--0 lead in the first inning on hits by Tommy Bubonic, Cort Hastings and Mitchell Meleski. Evan Daniele struck out five of the six batters he faced.

The Angels added to their lead in the third when Daniele hit a two-run homer over the left-centerfield wall, scoring Matt English (two hits) who led off with a single. Bubonic later doubled in Meleski for a 6--0 lead.

The Giants scored in the fourth inning on hits from Michael Keasey and Billy Macdonald and loaded the bases in the fifth inning with no outs before English caught a line drive at first base and doubled off the runner at second. The Giants scored just once in the inning.

AAA DIVISION

Rangers 11, Angels 3: The Rangers moved closer to clinching a spot in the upcoming Tournament of Champions.

The Rangers scored four times in the second inning to erase a 1-0 Angels lead on a single by Paddy Conroy and walks by Chris Croxton and Taylor Matteson. The Rangers pulled away late in the game on a string of hits by Kyle Trush, Conroy and A.J. Sanchez and a long double by Nick Aguilar.

Trush saved a passed ball behind the plate defensively and Trush and Croxton each had good days in the field and at the plate.

Cubs 12, Reds 11: Tommy Casey’s RBI single was part of a five-run fourth inning for the Cubs.

The Reds led early, 7-2, behind Brett Olsen’s two hits. The Cubs rallied in the third inning Jake Hastings doubled and Charlie Radosky singled. After two walks, Neema Korori and Nicholas Adams hit back-to-back RBI singles and Weston Wright later added an RBI single.

Casey made two big plays at shortstop in the final inning to help Max Carr preserve the victory. Casey and Dakota Armstrong struck out a combined nine batters for the Cubs.

Olsen struck out two batters for the Reds.

Cubs 6, Angels 5: Kyle Cousens tripled and singled to lead the Cubs to their third consecutive win. Charlie Radosky, Jack Flanigan and Jake Hastings also had hits in the game.

On the mound, Weston Wright pitched out of a jam in the first inning, striking out two of the last three batters he faced. Hastings pitched a memorable fifth inning, retiring the side on five pitches, including two balls he fielded for outs.

For the Angels, Nolan McCarthy (triple, single), Max Mulcahy and J.B. Lee each had two hits, and Mulcahy struck out three.

PONY DIVISION

Costa Mesa Angels 5, Newport Harbor Outback Steakhouse 5: The Angels trailed, 5-0, before rallying for a tie. Austin Quon and Ryan Bouler pitched for the Angels.

Matt McEachern hit a solo home run to right field to spark the Angels. Quon went three for three with a double and triple, and Brandon Kelly’s heads-up baserunning helped score the tying run.

Costa Mesa Angels 8, Costa Mesa Yankees 2: Brandon Kelly pitched four innings, allowing two runs, and Ryan Boulger pitched three innings of one-hit ball for the Angels.

Matt McEachern homered for the second straight game and had three hits, Boulger tripled and singled and Kelly added two hits. Alex McCormick chipped in with a hit and Tim Miller had four stolen bases in the victory.

Costa Mesa Dodgers 8, Costa Mesa Eagles 7: Daniel Carter and Derek Amendola pitched well for the Dodgers, and Tommy Stephens’ single up the middle sparked a four-run fourth inning.

The Dodgers added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead. The Eagles scored twice in the seventh inning to cut the final deficit.

MUSTANG DIVISION

Pres Companies 12, Toes on the Nose 2: Pres Companies extended its winning streak to seven games with solid pitching from Brad Tapfer and Keaton Cablay and strong defense from Bryan Shollin, Ryan McCully and Quinci Holgate. The offense was led by Andrew Chase (two hits and three runs), Noah Robson (RBI single) and Quinci Holgate (double and two runs).

Pres Companies 4, Irvine Nationals 4: Bryan Shollin scored from first base on Isaiah Suarez’s double to left field, beating the throw with a great slide. Andrew Chase, Brad Tapfer and Ryan Goodwin also drove in runs.

Pres Companies made some great defensive plays in the last two innings. Brad Tapfer caught a pop-up behind second and threw to Ryan Goodwin at home for a fifth-inning double play. Andrew Chase pitched out of a jam in the sixth with no outs and the winning run at third, aided by a two good plays by Noah Robson and Cole Sorensen.

BOYS’ UNDER-14

Costa Mesa 2, Irvine 1: Playing without substitutes, Costa Mesa won to improve its record to 22-1-2.

Edgar Rodriguez had a pair of shots off Christian Rodriguez’s corner kicks, but both were blocked. Cory Frino also had a shot on goal, taking Gilberto Garcia’s pass.

Teddy Prescott, Jovany Castillo, and Andrew Guerrero played well on defense, pushing the ball up field consistently.

In the second quarter, Cory Frino crossed to Eddie Saavedra, who scored the first goal of the game. Costa Mesa added second goal late in the third quarter, as Saavedra scored on Garcia’s pass. Jordan Young nearly scored, off a pass from Saavedra.

In the last quarter, Costa Mesa held strong, constantly moving the ball up field. Goalie Edgar Vega made several saves.

GIRLS’ UNDER-12

SPRING SELECT

Newport Beach 5, North Irvine 0: Newport Beach started quickly and kept the pressure on in a shutout victory.

Courtney McIntosh opened the scoring with a long shot from the left wing that bounced past the goalkeeper. Megan Bathen added a second goal in the first half with assists from Holly Patrick and Bailey McDaniel. Karli Leal opened the second half scoring with an assist from Tatum Norton. Holly Patrick and Carly Sorensen added insurance goals to seal the victory.

Newport Beach’s midfield of Madison Grant, Sophie Evans and Allie Pantoskey played a superb game. Lauren Clemence played tough on both ends of the field and Gracie Bebeau was solid on defense.

GIRLS’ UNDER-8

Green Dragons vs. Purple Ghostbusters: The Green Dragons and Purple Ghostbusters faced off in a well-fought match that was scoreless in the first half.

The Green Dragons’ Destry Comp and Siena Amorosso were a defensive wall in turning back the bigger Ghostbusters offense. Katrina Heil and Alexia Hipsher each took a turn in goal. Paula Pedrani, Caylee Talbot and Isabel Jeremias dribbled and passed well, moving the ball through the midfield. Kathryn Arblaster moved from defense to striker for this game, aggressively tackling the ball.

In the fourth quarter, Julia Ackerman scored twice and assisted on a goal by Yasmine Gomez.

BOYS’ UNDER-5

Green Monkeys vs. Green Falcons: Dayton Smith played strategic defense for the Monkeys and Tanner Casey put several balls in the net. Matthew Mowery, Jared Honda and Luke Nataupsky dribbled and passed well, moving the ball into scoring position.

ALL-NET DIVISION

Newport-Mesa Rippers 66, Huntington Beach Mavericks 47: The Rippers used strong team play to pick up a victory. Cecil Whiteside paced the team with 22 points, 12 rebounds and two assists, while Wes Woods added 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

Gabe Gomez and Trevor Davis ran the Rippers offense with precision, combining for 13 points and nine assists. Jackson O’Connor, Angel Beas, Luke Christiano and Wes Shaw also played well in the win.

TRACK AND FIELD

The following are the event winners in each division at the City of Newport Beach Youth Track and Field Championship.
