Bustin’ Dustin’s first win

There was a little south swell at the end of last week, and it was just what the Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ four-star, $75,000 Body Glove Surf Bout needed to finish off its event at Lower Trestles in San Clemente on Saturday.

Rising to the occasion was up-and-coming 21-year-old Hawaiian shredder “Bustin’” Dustin Cuizon, who took the win in his first World Qualifying Series final, cashing in on a $10,000 prize.

Cuizon scored a nine-point ride with a series of lip bashes and some nice rail-to-rail speed turns, pulling the high score of the hour.

East Coaster Asher Nolan was ripping, too, and placed second, while Aussie World Championship Tour veteran Luke Stedman was third and South Bay amateur ripper Alex Grey fourth.

Losing out in the semis were three-time winner Shane Beschen and East Coast World Championship Tour star Damien Hobgood.

H.B.’s Mike Hoisington was on fire, getting through lots of heats before going down in the quarterfinals.

Lots of upsets were seen in the round of 32. Losing out were big guns Pipe winner Rob Machado, Championship Tour standout Taylor Knox and former world champ C.J. Hobgood.

H.B. hotties Brett Simpson and Shaun Ward lost out in the round of 64 in a couple wave-starved heats.

In the pro junior final, the ocean didn’t throw too many waves their way, but the North American junior champ from Florida, Eric Geiselman, caught a couple nice ones, busting some moves, working them through, winning $2,500 and valuable ratings points.

Puerto Rico’s Dylan Graves got a good right in the eight zone and came in second. Alex Grey, making two finals, picked up a paddling interference that hurt, placing him third. Another Puerto Rican, Alejandro Moreda, rounded out the top four.

They did have a fundraiser at the event to “Help Save Trestles.” The issue is a proposal to build a six-lane, 16-mile long highway through San Onofre State Beach, right by the pristine Trestles surf break.

Runoff, pollution and disturbance of wildlife are some of the big concerns.

Body Glove auctioned off surfboards by top pros Chris Ward, Taylor Knox, C.J. Hobgood, Mike Losness and Holly Beck, along with some Vapor wetsuits, Oakley sunglasses and accessories, and Adio footwear, with the proceeds going to the Surfrider Foundation.
