MARY LOUISE FLEENOR
Mary Louise Fleenor of Laguna Beach died of natural causes Monday, May 1. She was 72.
Born in Green River, Wyoming, in 1933, she moved to Laguna with her husband, Chuck, in the late 1960s. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UC. San Diego, and also received a master’s degree in social work from UCLA.
She worked as supervisor for the County of Los Angeles Bureau of Adoption for many years. Upon her retirement, she established a successful travel consultancy. Over the next 20 years, she and her husband traveled extensively, visiting 115 countries.
She also served on the board of the Orange County Zoo and devoted many hours as a volunteer for Laguna Greenbelt Inc. and served at Crystal Cove State Park as a docent/naturalist.
An active, long-time member of American Assn. for University Women, she served as branch president from 1988-89 and received the AAUW Honoree Award in 1990.
Services will be private.
GERALD T. WALSH
Gerald T. Walsh, founder of Walsh Floorings and Windows in Laguna Beach, died of lung cancer April 6 in Maui, Hawaii, where he had lived since 1978. He was 78 years old.
Walsh was born in Omaha, Nebraska on Oct. 9, 1927. He and his wife, Jenny, moved west in the 1950s, eventually coming to Laguna Beach, and in 1964 he founded Walsh Carpets here.
He is survived by his daughter, Colleen Rice; sons, Jerry Jr. and wife, Dorothy; Scott and wife, Mildred; Steve and wife, Laurie; brother, Tom; and sisters, Ann Svboda and Mary Corneillus. There are six grandsons and six granddaughters.
Services were held April 22 in Kihei, Hawaii.
THOMAS P. KEMP
A memorial tribute honoring Thomas P. Kemp will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13 at the Island Hotel, 690 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach.
A Laguna Beach resident, Kemp died April 26 at the age of 75. He had been swimming laps in the Laguna Beach High School pool.
Kemp was the brother of Jack Kemp, who was the Republican nominee for vice president in 1996.
