Local trio awarded CIF seeds
Corona del Mar High, Costa Mesa and Estancia all earned top-four seeds in their respective CIF Southern Section boys’ volleyball playoff divisions while Newport Harbor and Sage Hill will also be competing, beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
Corona del Mar (24-5), which shared the Pacific Coast League title, is the No. 2 seed in Division II.
Costa Mesa, which ended Estancia’s three-year run as Golden West League champion, is the No. 2 seed in Division III. The Mustangs are 19-5, though they are 17-0 in best-of-five matches. They were 2-5 in best-of-three tournament matches, which also count on the overall record.
Estancia (17-9) is the No. 3 seed in Division III.
Coach Steve Conti’s Sea Kings, who won the Division II crown last season and have been to at least the semifinals seven of the last eight seasons, get a first-round bye. CdM, which won a share of its fourth straight league crown, will meet either Canyon of Anaheim (6-10) or Yucaipa (15-7) in the second round Tuesday at CdM.
Costa Mesa, which was 12-0 in league, plays hots to Loara (13-8), which tied for second in the Empire League, in the first round Friday.
Estancia is also at home Friday against Cypress (11-9), which tied Loara for second in the Empire League.
Newport Harbor (23-9), which finished second in its final Sea View League campaign ? the Sailors will be in the Sunset League next season ? are at home against Capistrano Valley (12-18) in a Division I first-round clash.
Sage Hill (7-9), which began the season 0-6, before finishing second in the Academy League with a 7-3 record, is on the road for its first-round match in Division V.
The Lightning visit Armenian Benevolent General Union (9-5), the runner-up in the Westside League. ABGU is located in Winnetta.
CdM’s first serious challenge should come in the quarterfinals, where perennial nemesis Santa Ynez and San Marcos, which the Sea Kings defeated in last year’s semifinals, potentially loom.
Second-round matches in all divisions are Tuesday.
