LONG BEACH ? When the Newport Harbor High boys’ and girls’ swim teams both captured Sea View League titles, it turned out to be the highlight of their respective seasons.

Neither team did as well as it hoped in the CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries, but that didn’t stop the few Sailors who reached Friday night’s CIF finals meet at Belmont Plaza Pool from finishing strong.

Senior Dan Furman led the way for the Newport Harbor boys by winning the consolation final in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.78. Furman, along with Telford Cottam, Clint Jorth and David Linden, won the consolation final in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:29.10.

Furman, the only Newport Harbor swimmer to reach a championship event, took seventh place overall in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.56. Furman qualified for the 50 freestyle championships by finishing sixth in the event in the preliminaries on Wednesday with a time of 21.57.

The Newport Harbor boys finished in 21st place overall with 39 points.

Junior Kayley Oka and senior Leah Robertson provided the highlights for the Newport Harbor girls. Oka took first place in the consolation finals of the 100 butterfly with a time of 58 seconds flat. She also took third in the consolation finals of the 200 individual medley at 2:11.71.

Robertson took second in the consolation finals in both the 500 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

The Newport Harbor girls also finished in 21st place with 30 points.

Both the Newport Harbor boys’ and girls’ 400 freestyle relay teams were alternates, but there were no withdrawals so neither team got the opportunity to compete.
