CALIFORNIA AMATEUR QUALIFYING

Two more golfers with Newport-Mesa ties have qualified for next month’s California Amateur.

Big Canyon Country Club member Michael Carpenter and Newport Beach resident Regan Kusmes each tied for fifth in a qualifying tournament Monday at the SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta. Both shot one-under-par 71.

They’ll join Newport Coast’s Amit Chopra and Corona del Mar’s Brian Lindley in the field for the tournament, scheduled for June 19-24 at Poppy Hills Golf Course and Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Pelican Hill Golf Club member Jamie Estrada and Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club member Kyle Ritter did not advance out of the qualifier.

CALIFORNIA SENIOR AMATEUR QUALIFYING

Three area seniors have advanced to next month’s California Senior Amateur Championships.

Ron Ramsey and Peter Daley, both of Newport Beach, shot four-over-par 76 to tie for seventh at a qualifying tournament at the Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook. Costa Mesa’s Dennis Iden tied for 17th at 77.

Newport Beach’s Dennis Noren had previously qualified for the Senior Amateur, scheduled for June 22-24 at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

Among the area golfers who did not qualify were Newport Coast’s David Bradford, Newport Beach’s David Cornett, Santa Ana Country Club member Rick Herrera, Newport Coast’s Bruce Loman and Costa Mesa’s Albert Sukut.

U.S. OPEN QUALIFYING

Newport Beach’s Don Dubois and John Ortega each came up short in local qualifying for the U.S. Open earlier this week.

Dubois shot an even-par 72 at Bakersfield Country Club on Monday, finishing tied for 16th and two shots out of a playoff. Ortega tied for 60th in qualifying at Bermuda Dunes Country Club.

NIKE GOLF JUNIOR

Estancia High golfer Ryan Knapp tied for 47th at the American Junior Golf Assn., Nike Golf Junior tournament at South Padre Island, Texas, last weekend.

Knapp shot a two-round total of 25-over-par 169. Tye Beall of El Paso won the tournament, defeating Houston’s Jordan Rumora in a one-hole playoff.

AREA UPDATE

Newport Harbor High grad Bryan Saltus tied for 12th at the Asian Tour’s Aamby Valley Asian Masters with a one-under-par 287. Saltus is 19th on the tour’s Order of Merit with $93,296 in earnings this year.
