Club doubles donations to $150,000

The Boys & Girls Club’s sixth annual Art of Giving gala on May 15 brought in more than $150,000 in donations.

More than 400 people attended the “Tropical Nights”-themed party at the Montage Resort & Spa.

The gala is the club’s primary fundraiser. This year’s fundraiser doubled the donations brought in from last year, club officials said.

The donations are essential to provide the club’s services.

“Many people don’t realize that although the Boys & Girls Club only charges families $135 for their child’s annual membership, the actual cost incurred by the club to provide services for each child is approximately $1,200 per year, “ board President Mike Hefty said.

Sparkuhl receives law degree

Erin Love Sparkuhl, daughter of Heather and Pat Sparkuhl, and a 1998 Laguna Beach High School graduate, has graduated from UCLA School of Law.

Sparkuhl will join Shook, Hardy, and Bacon, a law firm in Irvine.

Art critic speaks at commencement

William Wilson, former chief art critic for the Los Angeles Times, spoke to 58 graduating seniors at the Laguna College of Art & Design during commencement exercises Monday.

Wilson wrote more than 8,000 articles in his 34 years with the Times and was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in criticism.

Board meets Tuesday on labor issues

The school board will meet Tuesday to hear a presentation of the Laguna Beach Unified Faculty Assn. and the district’s joint proposal for a collective bargaining agreement.
