Marina High’s bid to win its first CIF-Southern Section championship in softball since 1995 was denied Tuesday by host Pacifica, which eliminated the third-seeded Vikings, 2-1.

The Mariners (23-5), the No. 2 team out of the Garden Grove League, scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-out RBI double by Andrea Harrison.

Marina, champion of the Sunset League, had tied the score in the fifth inning. The Vikings lost despite outhitting the Mariners 7-4, ending their season with a record of 24-6.

Senior Krystal Heinle took the loss for Marina and finished the year 22-6.

Heinle did get a complete-game victory Friday when Marina edged visiting Corona, 1-0, in a first-round game. She gave up three hits and worked her way out of a jam in the second inning by striking out three batters after the Panthers, an at-large entry from the Mountain View League, had positioned runners at second and third.

The Vikings also cut down a Panther baserunner as she attempted to score the tying run in the fourth inning.

Marina scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the first when Michelle Fuzzard doubled to the fence in centerfield and scored on a single by Mariah Noguiera.

In other CIF-SS softball action, Ocean View, the No. 2 team out of the Golden West League, dropped a 4-1 first-round Division IV road game to Channel League runner-up Ventura.
