Irrelevant Week nears

Kevin McMahan, a 6 foot 2, 196-pound wide receiver from the University of Maine, was selected by the Oakland Raiders as the 255th and final pick in this year’s NFL Draft. That selection earned him the distinction of being this year’s Mr. Irrelevant.

McMahan will travel to Newport Beach, and from June 15 to 19 he will receive gifts from hundreds of businesses, be treated to a day at Disneyland, and be honored at a banquet.

On June 15, McMahan will be roasted, toasted and presented with the Lowsman Trophy at the All-Star Lowsman Sports Banquet at the Irvine Marriott, where ESPN’s John Ireland will serve as master of ceremonies. Individual tickets sell for $100, tables for 10 are $1,000, and sponsor tables range from $1,500 to $2,500.

On June 16, McMahan will lead the Irrelevant Week Pub Crawl, which begins at 8 at Sharkeez. For $20, participants will receive an Irrelevant Week souvenir T-shirt, a VIP wrist band to get to the head of the lines and a raffle ticket at each pub.

In the middle of the seventh inning of the Angels-Padres baseball game on June 18, McMahan will join the grounds crew to drag the field.

Irrelevant Week has 200 tickets available for the game. The $20 price includes a tailgate party and food. It’s going to be one fun day!

Finally, McMahan will be guest of honor at the Arrival Party on June 19, hosted by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce. The 6 p.m. event, which costs $15 per person, will be held on the beach at Newport Dunes and includes food provided by local restaurants, entertainment and a cash bar.

FISH FRY

Gather the family and head to the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club Fish Fry on June 3 and 4 at Lions Park in Costa Mesa.

The fish fry is a good, old-fashioned community gathering that starts at noon each day with carnival rides and games, prizes, hot dogs, hamburgers, home-made pies and pastries, fish and chips, entertainment on the main stage, and baby and beauty contests. The top raffle prize is a 2006 Suzuki Forenza. Funds raised by the Lions Club are distributed to local organizations and several Lions International Projects for the prevention of blindness.
