Adoption Guild tournament opens

The 45th Roy Emerson Adoption Guild Classic opened Saturday with action in 25 divisions at four sites around Newport Beach and Irvine.

In the men’s open singles, Palisades Tennis Club’s Jeff Thomsen swept Suri Appa, 6-1, 6-3, and will face No. 1 seed Alexander Reichel in the round of 16 today. Corona del Mar High grad Garrett Snyder defeated Rashad Gettone (default) and Matt Ronce (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and will meet No. 3 seed Oren Motevassel.

Newport Beach native Kaes Van’t Hof, the No. 4 seed, topped Kevin Armstrong, 6-1, 6-3, and will take on John Michael Cham-A-Koon today.

In the women’s open singles, Costa Mesa’s Nelly Radeva routed Stephanie Lansdorp, 6-0, 6-1, and meets No. 3 seed Martina Nejedly today. Corona del Mar’s Cierra Gaytan-Leach topped Jamie Buterbaugh, 6-3, 6-4, and will face Tesoro High’s McCall Jones today.

In the men’s 4.5 doubles, Bart Bowen and Ron Romero of Mesa Verde Country Club, and Newport Beach’s Ho Kim and Paul Kincaid each won matches and advanced to the round of 16.

Five local teams advanced in the men’s 5.0 doubles: Newport Beach’s Loc Phan and Irvine’s David Lang; Palisades Tennis Club’s Michael Abel and Barry Crook; John Nguyen and Palisades Tennis Club’s Tony Wong; Palisades’ Edward Pederson and Christopher Cyga; and Newport Beach Tennis Club’s Art Matthews and Scott Patton.

Palisades Tennis Clubs’ David Bohannon and Kevin Kearney swept Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club’s Hadley Ogle and Bob Ogle, 6-2, 6-3, in men’s 6.0 doubles.

Barbara Bowles and Palisades Tennis Club’s Patricia Castagna won and advanced in women’s 3.0 doubles, as did Palisades’ Ann Bath and Michelle Lavonne in women’s 3.5 doubles.

In women’s 4.0 doubles, Palisades’ Jamie Deusterman and Natalie Gonzalez advanced, as did Newport Beach Tennis Club’s Vanessa Gregor and Lori Klein.

Palisades Tennis Club’s Jennifer Hyndman and Natalie Rietveld moved on in women’s 4.5 doubles, along with Newport Beach Tennis Clubs’ Sharon Nichols and Palisades’ Linda Van Pelt.

Roseanne Faul and Christine Chively, both of Palisades Tennis Club, reached the quarterfinals in women’s 5.0 doubles.

Among those who advanced in mixed 4.0 doubles were: Newport Beach Tennis Club’s Tim White and Kathy White; Gregor and Newport Beach’s Jose Luna; and Palisades Tennis Clubs’ Renee Depaul and Stephen Hearne.

Moving on in mixed 5.0 doubles were: Dan Oriza and Palisades’ Susan Hagstrom, and Palisades’ Shively and Christopher Gleiter.
