Juniors compete locally

Newport Beach tennis star Joseph DiGiulio had the best finish among Newport-Mesa area players competing in both the Quicksilver Junior Championships (boys) and the Roxy Junior Championships (girls), completed Tuesday at various sites.

No. 1-seeded DiGiulio, competing in the boys’ 12 singles division, defeated Nikko Madregallejo, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 16, and No. 5-seeded Brendan Aguilar, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

DiGiulio’s title run came to and end in the semifinals, where he fell to No. 9-seeded David Doehring, 6-4, 6-2.

In the boys’ 16 singles division, Costa Mesa’s Charlie Alvarado and Corona del Mar High’s Christopher Freeman advanced to the round of 16 before getting eliminated.

Alvarado defeated Geoffrey Lewis, 6-0, 6-2, in the round of 32, before losing to No. 9-seeded Matthew Siow, 7-6, 6-2.

Freeman, seeded No. 32, upset No. 17 Brandon Wei, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32, before getting ousted by John Huang, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.

Corona del Mar High’s Ryan Caughren fell to Evan Bolles, 6-7, 6-2, 10-2, in the round of 32.

A handful of local girls players made runs in their tournament, before being ousted in the round of 16.

In girls’ 18 singles, Corona del Mar High’s Jill Damion, the No. 9 seed, defeated Coy Jones Hunter, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 32. She was defeated by No. 3-seeded Alison Ramos, 6-3, 7-5.

Newport Beach’s Jillian Braverman defeated Marianna Khachatryan, 6-4, 6-0, in the round of 32, before falling to Tanya Raykova in the round of 16.

In girls’ 16 singles, Newport Beach’s Ali Walters, the No. 8 seed, swept No. 17-seeded Hilary Schroeder in the round of 32 before losing to No. 9-seeded Nikki Sanders, 6-1, 7-5.

Newport Beach’s Hailey Hogan, the No. 7 seed, reached the round of 16 by defeating Danielle Flores, 7-5, 6-2. She then fell to No. 9-seeded Kristine Kouyoumjian, 6-2, 6-2.

Newport Beach’s Melissa Matsuoka, the No. 9 seed, swept Valerie Thong to reach the round of 16, where she fell to No. 6-seeded Jessica Parizher.

Newport Coast resident Jungyeun Lee reached the round of 32 before losing to Joanna Smith, 6-3, 6-4.
