All you have to do is look at the numbers and it makes sense. An overall high school coaching record of 647-146. A grand total of 21 league titles. Four CIF Southern Section championships. Three National High School Tennis All-American Tennis Invitational titles.

Tuesday, Corona del Mar High boys’ tennis Coach Tim Mang learned he had been named the National High School Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Assn.

“I walked into the office at school and someone said there’s a big box here for you. It’s a giant, antique bronze thing that weighs about 10 pounds,” Mang said. “It has a coach and a kid and a big American flag on it.”

The Sea Kings earned a share of the Pacific Coast League title and reached the CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals.

In addition, Mang paired up singles star Fabian Matthews and doubles standout Dustin Hladek in doubles for the CIF individuals tournament. Matthews and Hladek promptly went on to capture the doubles championship.

Once the initial shock wore off, Mang said he was pleased to have received the honor.

“Oh, it’s great,” Mang said. “I like it very much.”

Mang, the former boys’ tennis coach at Edison High in Huntington Beach, has headed the Corona del Mar boys’ program for the last 12 years. During that stretch, he has compiled a record of 282-43, including five league titles, four CIF Southern Section championship match appearances and three CIF titles.

Mang coached boys’ tennis at Edison High from 1972 to 1988, compiling a record of 290-90 while winning nine league championships. He coached the Orange Coast College men in 1990, when the Pirates finished 17-3 and No. 5 in the state.

Mang also coached the Corona del Mar High girls from 1995 to 1998, compiling a record of 75-13 and leading the team to a CIF Southern Section title in 1997.

He has coached such All-CIF Southern Section standouts as Nina and Nadia Vaughan, Tyler Dent (1996 CIF singles champion), Garrett Snyder (CIF doubles champion in 2001 with Brian Morton, CIF doubles champ in 2002 with Carsten Ball, and CIF singles finalist in 2003) and 2005 CIF singles finalist Wesley Miller.

Eight years ago, after taking his team to compete in a national tennis tournament in Kansas City, Mo., Mang decided to put a better one. This year marked the seventh National High School Tennis All-American Boys’ Team Invitational Tournament, hosted by Mang.dpt-cdmtennis01.IMGGraphicInfoJI1RHLT520060601JI1RHLT5No Caption
