Breakers in all-star volleyball

Stephanie Darnall and Xander Olson of Laguna Beach High will play tonight in the 29th annual Dave Mohs Memorial Orange County High School Volleyball All-Star Games at Newport Harbor High School.

The girls’ match will be played at 6 p.m., followed at approximately 7:30 p.m. by the boys’ match.

Admission to the event is $5 and a silent auction will be held at the matches which are being used as a fundraiser for cancer research for Hoag Cancer Center on behalf of the late Dave Mohs.

Former athletes playing in the event include Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA Player of the Year Misty May-Treanor, NCAA Player of the Year Brent Hillard and Olympic gold medalists Dain Blanton and Steve Timmons.

Darnall, an outside hitter, will play on a girls’ South squad coached by Dan Thomassen of Sage Hill and John Gipe of Tesoro.

Olson, a middle blocker, is on the boys’ South team coached by Donny Rafter of Woodbridge and Jeff Uhrig of Santa Margarita.
