All-stars play tonight
Seven area volleyball players are scheduled to participate in tonight’s Dave Mohs Memorial Orange County High School Volleyball All-Star Matches at Newport Harbor High.
The girls’ match begins at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be best-of-three.
Daily Pilot girls’ volleyball Player of the Year Cat Dailey of Sage Hill leads the local contingent in the match. Dailey will play on the South girls’ team, along with Newport Harbor opposite hitter Bryana Carey. Sage Hill Coach Don Thomassen will coach the South, assisted by Tesoro’s John Gipe.
Dailey led the Lightning to the CIF Southern Section Division V championship and has signed with Cal. Carey, whose Newport Harbor team made the playoffs, is headed to William & Mary.
In the boys’ match, Costa Mesa outside hitter Ryan Bagwell and Mustangs Coach Chris Komer will represent the North, alongside Newport Harbor libero Sean Grubbs and setter Ted Slater, as well as Estancia middle blocker Dallas Kopp. Corona del Mar middle blocker Scott Slaughter will play for the South team.
Bagwell helped lead Costa Mesa to the Southern Section Division III title match in Komer’s first season. Slater has signed with the University of the Pacific, while Kopp is headed to Long Beach State. Slaughter signed with UC Santa Barbara.
In addition to the local players, there are a number of participants who will be playing locally in the near future.
Of the girls’ players, North outside hitter Alex Filkins (Los Alamitos) and South outside hitter McCall Miller (Mater Dei) will attend UC Irvine in the fall.
On the boys’ side, North libero Kenny Webster (Edison), South outside hitter Cory Yoder (San Clemente) and South middle blocker Kevin Wynne (Capistrano Valley) are also headed to UCI.
Admission is $5, with proceeds going to the cancer center at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.
