UCI’S BEERER LAUDED

UC Irvine senior Mike Beerer has been named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District 8 second team for men’s track and field.

Beerer, a mechanical/aerospace engineering major, is a four-time Big West Scholar-Athlete.

Beerer, competing at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento beginning Wednesday, won the hammer throw at the Big West Conference Championships last month, as well as in 2005.

His top mark this season of 215 feet, 9 inches ranks No. 2 in UCI history, just three inches shy of the school record.

He was named UCI’s male Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2005-06.

To be considered for the Academic All-District 8 award, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average, be at least a sophomore academically and be either a starter or a prominent reserve in their respective sport.
