Man dies in plaza fall

A man apparently killed himself by jumping from the roof of South Coast Plaza’s north parking structure at about 2:20 p.m. Saturday, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Based on preliminary investigations, police said the man, a 51-year-old Garden Grove resident, reportedly jumped or fell from the sixth level of the structure, which is between Nordstrom and Sears.

It did not appear there was a struggle or that the man was pushed off, and there was no indication he accidentally fell, so police are labeling the incident a suicide pending further investigation, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Mark Manley said.

Paramedics took the man to Coastal Communities Hospital in Santa Ana where he was pronounced dead. Orange County Coroner officials were working Sunday to identify the man.
