The Corona del Mar High girls’ golf team has been named academic team champion for the 2005-06 school year by the CIF State office.

The Sea Kings posted a team grade-point average of 3.88 to top the rest of the girls’ golf programs in the state. Corona del Mar’s GPA, in fact, was bested by winners in only three other sports.

Only Carlmont (3.96 in girls’ basketball), San Marcos (3.93 in girls’ cross country) and Champion Christian (3.91 in girls’ volleyball) had a higher team GPA among state honorees in 27 boys’ and girls’ teams in 17 sports.

The CIF Academic State Championships were initiated in 1996 as a way to reward teams with the highest collective GPA, based on an unweighted 4.0 scale.

Winners receive banners suitable for display in the school gym.

Members of Coach Mike Starkweather’s CdM team were Michelle Drucker, Kelly Kawata, Jonna Kim, Katie McKitterick, Jessica Milner, Kelly Moorhead and Courtney Wright.

McKitterick was a Daily Pilot Female High School Athlete of the Week honoree this season.

Corona del Mar High had four players in the top 12 in the Pacific Coast League finals this season for the first time ever.

McKitterick had a two-day total of 116 and qualified for the CIF Southern Section individual tournament.

McKitterick and Kim were first-team All-Pacific Coast League selections for the Sea Kings. Drucker and Milner were named second-team all-league.

The Sea Kings finished fifth at the CIF Southern team divisional last fall, and set school records for team scores in both nine- and 18-hole matches.dpt-cdmgolfhonor07.IMGGraphicInfoDI1RNM0N20060607DI1RNM0NNo Caption
