Show to raise charity funds

At first glance, it’s hard to see a connection between the Orange County Interfaith Shelter, the Detroit Bar and popular local musicians and DJs. But tonight, they will all be linked by a worthy cause ? a night of music to raise funds for homeless and poverty-stricken people in Orange County.

The nondenominational shelter welcomes people “from all backgrounds and walks of life,” community outreach coordinator Nicole Barker said. This is the first time the Orange County Interfaith Shelter has collaborated on a benefit concert, which the shelter staff hopes will encourage a younger crowd to take interest in the shelter’s activities.

Most important, the concert will raise money to support daily operations of the emergency program at the shelter and develop a greater sense of community awareness about homelessness and poverty.

The cost for entry is a $5 donation; all proceeds directly benefit the emergency shelter at Orange County Interfaith Shelter, the county’s largest shelter for homeless families.

The shelter has three housing programs: emergency services for families needing to spend three nights at the shelter; transitional, which houses families on-site for six to nine months depending on the circumstances; and second-stage, in which families live in permanent or “close to permanent” off-site housing at a low rent rate, paying their own bills.

Emergency shelter staff member Becky Zaragoza said that Orange County Interfaith Council serves “any group that constitutes a family,” including one- and two-parent families, grandparents with grandchildren and other unique arrangements.

“The goal at ? [the interfaith shelter] is self-sufficiency,” Barker said. “We don’t want to just enable people.”

Tonight’s benefit concert will begin at 8 p.m. at Detroit Bar. Scheduled to perform are Orange-based indie-pop band the Santiago Steps, folksy-indie artists Sendaero, San Diego-based singer-songwriter Molly Jenson and DJs Derek and Xanaboo.
