Softball All-Stars win tourney

The Huntington Beach Girls’ Softball 14-and-Under All-Star teams won four games last weekend to capture first place in its division at the Brea All-Star Tournament.

Huntington Beach topped Chino Hills, 4-2, in semifinal round play, then defeated West Whittier, 9-4, in the final.

Amanda Horowitz and Jacqueline Kent continued to dominate on the mound, as the two pitchers combined to allow just eight runs in four games.

Horowitz had a one-hit shutout in the 12-0 win over West Valley of San Fernando. She held Chino Hills to three hits and two runs in six innings in the semifinals.

Kent had wins against Orange-Villa Park (11-2) and in the title game, where she allowed West Whittier four runs while striking out six in seven innings.

Huntington Beach’s offense backed the two pitchers by scoring 36 runs and recording 40 hits in the four games. Lana Rutkin lead the team going eight for 10, which included a home run, triple and three doubles.

Other key performances came from Allison Dufault, who homered; Randi Heidenreichwho went five for 10; and Jessica Garcia, who went six for 13 with a home run.

Also contributing to the tournament title run were Chelsea Breitwieser, Charlene Courtney, Taylor Gould, Kylee Lappin, Amanda Nicholaou and Meghan White.

Huntington Beach next plays in the American Softball Assn. District Tournament June 23-25 in Cypress.
