On the road again

I’m on the road again in the middle of nowhere, somewhere along the coast of Panama near Playa Teta. As I write to you, I am sitting in the bedroom of someone who has graciously invited me into his home to use his computer so I can access the Internet.

I flew into Panama City just before midnight on Monday under the full moon and a cascading ocean below with heaps of ships backed up to cross the Panama Canal. I also drove over it yesterday after driving around in circles trying to leave Panama City and head to the coast.

The surf is expected to reach 10 feet in the coming days. Last night it rained cats and dogs, with a lightning and thunderstorm I thought were only possible with the use of special effects in movies.

But last night was more than real as the sound of thunder roared through the night’s sky as lightning illuminated it like streaking missiles.

Most of today was spent trying to find water and food, walking the shoreline and stuffing my pockets full of seashells. The sun is beginning to set, and it looks like another strong storm is approaching. Hopefully it also brings the big swell everyone is predicting.

There’s nothing more exciting than the unpredictable nature of traveling in a third-world country that doesn’t seem to rely much on road signs or maps.

Tomorrow should be interesting. We will try to make our way up the coast for about six hours to Santa Catalina. Hopefully we can find our way, or at least a place to sit down and have some food.

I’m not sure I can stomach another Power Bar. Peace.
