Locals alive in sectionals

FOUNTAIN VALLEY ? The action is getting intense at the Southern California Tennis Assn. Junior Sectional Championships at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club.

The singles and doubles draws have been pared to the Round of 16, with several competitors from the Newport-Mesa area still hoping to make their mark.

In the boys’ 18 singles draw, Robert Khoury of Newport Beach defeated Quoc-Kien Doan from Yorba Linda, 6-0, 6-2, on Monday in the round of 64.

He advances to Wednesday’s round of 32, when he will face Thomas Shubert of Irvine at noon at Los Caballeros.

In girls’ 18 singles, Corona del Mar’s Jill Damion defeated Brooke Pletcher of Laguna Niguel, 6-1, 6-3, in Monday’s round of 64.

Damion will take on El Segundo resident Asagi Onaga in the round of 16, Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Newport Beach resident Alexandra Welliver was defeated by Laguna Hills resident Christina Tan, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, in the girls’ 18 round of 64 on Monday.

Costa Mesa resident Charlie Alvarado remains alive in the boys’ 16 singles bracket. He topped Nathaniel Burt of Irvine, 6-0, 6-2, in Monday’s round of 64.

Alvarado will face Alex Brigham of Culver City in the round of 32 Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Costa Mesa resident Dante Saleh, competing in boys’ 10 singles, swept Bryce Pereira of San Gabriel, 6-0, 6-0, in Monday’s round of 64.

Saleh is in the round of 32 today at 12:30 p.m. against Kaelan Hicks from Thousand Oaks.

Also in the boys’ 10 singles draw, Costa Mesa resident James Zillman advanced to today’s round of 32.

Zillman defeated Chase Friedman of San Diego, 6-0, 6-0, on Monday and will face another San Diego resident, William Chu, in the round of 16 today at 12:30 p.m.

Additional locals remain in the girls’ 18 doubles tournament.

Damion and partner Sarah Fansler, a Laguna Niguel resident, won their round of 32 match on Saturday. They defeated Tiffany Mai of Westminster and Rachel Manasse of Manhattan Beach, 6-0, 6-3.

Today, Damion and Fansler are scheduled to meet Kimberly Cox and Justine Feaster from Escondido in the round of 16 at 2 p.m.

Yet another duo in the girls’ 18 doubles draw is led by Corona del Mar resident Cierra Gaytan-Leach, who is teamed with Micaela Heim from Mission Viejo.

Gaytan-Leach and Hein won by default in Saturday’s round of 32 against Asagi and Hazuki Onaga from El Segundo.

The local tandem is scheduled to face Olivia Coleman from Los Angeles and Christina Tan from Laguna Niguel in the round of 16 today at 2 p.m.
