Plenty of locals competing today at Los Caballeros

FOUNTAIN VALLEY ? With all age groups in at least the round of 32, this is where the Southern California Tennis Association Junior Sectional Championships get tough. Still, more than a dozen Newport-Mesa area locals are still in the mix.

In the boys’ 18 singles draw, Robert Khoury of Newport Beach faces Thomas Shubert of Irvine today at 2 p.m. in the round of 32 at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club.

In the girls’ 18 singles draw, three locals are still in the mix. No. 6-seeded Nelly Radeva of Costa Mesa faces Asagi Onaga of El Segundo today at 3:30 p.m. with a round of 16 berth on the line.

Corona del Mar High junior Jill Damion is also in action today at 5 p.m., facing off against Thien Nguyen of Long Beach in another round of 32 match. Damion and teammate Sarah Fansler are also still alive in the girls’ 18 doubles, and will next play in the semifinals on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Newport Beach’s Jillian Braverman plays Coco Vandeweghe of Rancho Santa Fe today at 3:45 p.m.

In boys’ 16 singles, No.4-seeded Fabian Matthews of Corona del Mar High plays John Huang of Trabuco Canyon today at 3:30 p.m. in the round of 32. Charlie Alvarado of Costa Mesa also continues his tournament with a round of 32 match against Alex Brigham of Culver City, at 11 a.m.

In girls’ 16 singles, Corona del Mar’s Cierra Gaytan-Leach, the No. 6 seed, is slated to play against Tiffany Mai of Westminster today at 12:30 p.m. in the round of 32. Like Damion, Gaytan-Leach is still alive in the doubles portion of the competition with her partner Micaela Heim of Mission Viejo.

The duo plays Anna Chkhikvishvili and Kaitlyn Christian in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the right to play Damion and Fansler in the semifinals.

Also still in the girls’ 16 singles draw is Alexandria Walters of Newport Beach. She faces Michelle Sulahian of Van Nuys today at 11 a.m. in the round of 32.

Newport Beach resident Melissa Matsuoka is still alive in the girls’ 14 singles draw. She’ll tangle with Sarah Blair of Yorba Linda today at 4 p.m.

In boys’ 12 singles, No. 3-seeded Joseph Di Giulio of Newport Beach plays Caryl Hernandez of Pico Rivera today at noon with a round of 16 spot on the line.

James Zillman of Costa Mesa, the No. 8 seed in boys’ 10 singles, is also into the quarterfinals on Friday at 2 p.m.
