Locals beaten at sectionals

FOUNTAIN VALLEY ? For the most part, locals had a tough time on Thursday at the 104th annual Southern California Junior Sectional Championships.

Nelly Radeva of Costa Mesa lost to Lyndsay Kinstler of Laguna Beach, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the girls’ 18 singles round of 16. She drops into a consolation bracket, where she’ll face Alison Ramos of Carson today at 3:30 p.m. at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club.

In boys’ 16 singles action, Corona del Mar’s Fabian Matthews fell to Jason Lin of Irvine, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. Matthews is bumped into a consolation bracket. He is scheduled to play Alex Brigham of Culver City today at 3:30 p.m. at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Local girls’ 14 singles players Jungyeun Lee of Newport Coast, as well as Hailey Hogan and Melissa Matsuoka of Newport Beach all dropped their round of 16 matches on Thursday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Lee fell to No. 6-seeded Joanna Smith of Laguna Niguel, 6-3, 6-1. Hogan lost to No. 5-seeded Jessica Parizher of Woodland Hills, 7-6, 6-2, and Matsuoka fell to No. 3-seeded Gabrielle Desimone of Rancho Santa Fe, 6-1, 6-2.

Hogan and Matsuoka play each other in the round of 16 consolation quarterfinals today at 3:30 p.m. at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Lee plays Laguna Beach’s Alex Tachovsky in her consolation match at the same time and site.

Corona del Mar’s Jill Damion won her girls’ 18 round of 32 consolation matchup by forfeit. Damion plays Christina Tan of Laguna Niguel today at 11 a.m. at Los Caballeros in a consolation match.

Jillian Braverman of Newport Beach lost to Brittany Blalock of Rancho Mirage, 6-0, 6-4, in another girls’ 18 consolation match to end her tournament.

Charlie Alvarado of Costa Mesa was losing to Michael Lin of San Diego, 6-1, 3-0, before retiring due to injury in a boys’ 16 singles consolation match.

In boys’ 10 singles today at Mile Square Park, No. 8-seeded James Zillman of Costa Mesa meets No. 2-seeded Ryan To of Tustin in a 2 p.m. quarterfinal.
