Newport couple receives a royal welcome

A royal summer jaunt in Europe for Bayshores resident Brig. Gen. Donald Henley and his wife, Ludie, included a magical visit with His Serene Highness Crown Prince Alois of Liechtenstein. The handsome Newport couple joined Alois, 38, who ascended to the throne two years ago at the behest of his father, then ruling Prince Hans Adam II. The young royal and his wife, Sophie, the former Duchess of Bavaria, and their three young children live in a “storybook” castle overlooking the Liechtenstein capital of Vaduz.

Henley shared that Liechtenstein, with a population of about 35,000 people, is one of only 10 hereditary monarchies remaining in Europe.

“Firmly pro-American and pro-West, Liechtenstein has welcomed refugees from Communist nations and has sponsored stays at 11 villages for children who lost parents in both 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina,” Henley said.
