Flag day for Book of Golden Deeds

The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor honored Jeanette Chernovy, a member of the Costa Mesa Police Department traffic bureau staff, at a recent meeting by entering her name in the Book of Golden Deeds. In presenting the award, club member Gary Tewinkle noted Chernovy lost her father in the Vietnam conflict and decided to honor his memory by replacing torn and weathered American flags, at her cost.

“She actually makes new flags and distributes them to those that seem to need them replaced,” Tewinkle said.

The program is now called “Flags to You.”

“You touch someone flying a flag,” she said.

OASIS SAILING CLUB HONORS COMMODORE

John Byerlein was honored at a June 16 Oasis Sailing Club dinner and roast by members, friends and family at the Oasis Senior Center. Byerlein served as commodore of the growing club for the last four years. His enthusiasm, organizational skills and friendliness helped the club grow to more than 100 members.

Skipper Rob Jason coordinated the special salmon and pasta delight and club secretary Jim Stone coordinated the extensive wine services for the evening with special “Commodore John Byerlein” labels found on a variety of bottles, large to small. Millard MacAdam served as master of ceremonies for the evening, introducing Byerlein’s family and special friends. After dinner, Byerlein’s daughter, Janet Byerlein, read a poem she had written to honor her dad as guests were introduced.

A framed, signed gift of the old ship’s flag from all of the club’s skippers was presented to Byerlein by Harold Sharp, vice commodore. Sharp also presented to Jenny Lemaire a solid brass yacht vase, and he gave Byerlein a beautifully mounted ship’s bell from all of the club’s members.
