Four area schools distinguish themselves

The word “distinguished” suggests notable, renowned, prominent, even celebrated. And celebrate is exactly what the Newport-Mesa Unified School District has been doing at four schools recognized as California Distinguished Schools.

California, Lincoln, Mariners and Victoria elementary schools have all received the title for 2005-2006.

To apply for the award, schools must meet the eligibility criteria for average yearly progress, as reported on the 2005 Accountability Progress Report. They must also have school-wide 2005 growth reflected in their Academic Performance Index. School selection is based on the California School Recognition Program’s criteria that address all areas of a school’s program. These elements include: high academic expectations, visionary and collaborative school leadership, regular and systematic monitoring of student progress, strong core curriculum, state board-adopted and standards-aligned textbooks and core curriculum materials, and varied teaching strategies that provide challenging learning experiences for students.

In addition, schools must also possess strong library media services and appropriate technology, academically competent and caring teachers, multiple-learning support services for all students, family involvement and partnerships with business and community groups, safe school culture that supports the inclusion of all students and promotes positive character traits, programs that foster wellness and healthy behaviors in all students and a well-maintained learning environment

All four “Distinguished School” Principals, Kelli Smith of California, Jane Holm of Lincoln, Pam Coughlin of Mariners and Judy Laasko of Victoria agree that this award would not have been possible without an excellent staff and committed families working together for the future of our students.
