BAILEY, MERLO NOTCH GOALS

SYDNEY, Australia ? Former UC Irvine men’s water polo All-Americans Ryan Bailey and Rick Merlo each netted goals in Team USA’s 13-12 victory over Australia at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Center on Wednesday. It marked Team USA’s first victory of the season.

A pair of other Anteater All-Americans, Jeff Powers and netminder Genai Kerr, also are on the national team’s roster.

Team USA, which is 1-2 so far this season, is preparing for the FINA World League Series in Victoria, Canada, July 14-16.

MAY-TREANOR TRIUMPHS

GSTAAD, Switzerland ? No. 1-seeded Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh captured their 23rd international gold medal in 42 FIVB tournaments June 24 when they defeated Brazilians Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca, 21-17, 21-17, at the 1-to-1 Energy Grand Slam.

With the victory, May-Treanor, a Newport Harbor High graduate, and Walsh avenged a loss to the Brazilian pair last month in Modena, Italy. It marked May-Treanor and Walsh’s 27th consecutive victory in Gstaad. The pair are 32-2 in the Swiss Alps, totaling $127,800 in Gstaad earnings.

May-Treanor and Walsh moved to the championship match by beating No. 21-seeded Xue Chen and Zhang Xi, 21-14, 23-21, in 40 minutes.

YOUTH BASEBALL CAMPS

The Newport Harbor High baseball program will offer more summer camp sessions for players ages 6-14, beginning July 10-13 at the Sailors’ field.

The camps will be held Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. The remaining sessions are scheduled for July 10-13, July 17-20, July 24-27 and July 31-Aug. 3. One middle school camp for players ages 11-14 is set for July 10-13.

All camps will offer drills appropriate to age and skill levels and feature instruction on basic fielding, hitting, base running and game experience.
