The Huntington Beach Girls Softball 14-and-Under All-Star team won its division at the 2006 Southern California Amateur Softball Assn. Central District championship last weekend in Cypress.

The triumph earned Huntington a berth in the Amateur Softball Assn. State Championship tournament July 7 to 9 in Lancaster.

Huntington went undefeated in the grueling, double-elimination tournament which they capped by defeating Mission Viejo, 11-7, in a seven-inning, championship game Sunday.

Huntington took the first lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Meghan White, but Mission Viejo came back big by scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth. Huntington got two runs back in its half of the fifth behind hits by Chelsea Breitwieser, Jessica Garcia, Allison Dufault and Lana Rutkin. Huntington then took control by scoring seven runs on six hits in the sixth inning.

Jacqueline Kent earned the win.

Huntington began the tournament Friday with a 9-7 win over Laguna Niguel, with Kent notching a victory that wasn’t secure until second baseman Taylor Gould recorded the final out with the bases loaded in the final inning.

Huntington then faced Cypress in its final game Friday and edged the host team, 3-2. Huntington came back from a 2-1 deficit by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Randi Heidenreich tripled home Rutkin, who had a lead-off single, and with two and two strikes on her, Amanda Horowitz gave herself the pitching win by lining a single to left field to score Heidenreich with the game-winning run.

On Saturday, Huntington had little trouble with Tustin and came away with a 15-1 win. Horowitz threw a no-hitter and offensively, Huntington racked up three doubles and a pair of triples.

Every Huntington player hit in the tournament, which the team concluded by scoring 48 hits behind one home run, seven triples and eight doubles.

Horowitz and Kent dominated on the mound, allowing 17 runs while striking out 15.
