Newport-Mesa’s public safety agencies encourage everyone to follow these rules and tips to make it a safe holiday.

WEST NEWPORT

In West Newport Beach, police maintain a “safety enhancement area” in which fines are increased for certain citations, such as drinking in public, fighting or possession of fireworks.

This area is between 32nd Street and 54th Street, from West Coast Highway to Newport Boulevard.

FIREWORKS

All fireworks are illegal in Newport Beach. Costa Mesa allows the sale of safe and sane fireworks between July 1 and 4, said Costa Mesa Fire Marshal Tom Macduff. More than 30 fireworks stands have permits to operate in Costa Mesa this year. The stands are pre-inspected and the fire marshal periodically monitors them to ensure they’re following regulations, Macduff said.

Bringing fireworks into Newport is illegal, Newport Fire Marshal Steve Bunting said.

Costa Mesa firefighters patrol for illegal fireworks on the Fourth of July. Illegal fireworks in both cities are confiscated and later destroyed.
