Lions Club members, teachers honored

Mike McIlroy has been installed as president of the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club, replacing Mike Scheafer, whose term had expired. Serving with McIlroy are Joe Coons, first vice president; Ryan Ferryman, second vice president; past District Governor Mike Scheafer, secretary; Raul Jara, treasurer; Bob Ooten, tail twister; Ron Craig, lion tamer; Lee Gibbs, bulletin editor; Del Mangels, Roberto Jara, Jim Wahner and Ron Channels were installed as directors.

Awards given by Scheafer at the recent Officer installation included lion of the year, given to Mike McIlroy; most valuable Lion, Raul Jara; Robert Sinskey awards went to Rollo McClellan and Del Mangels, and the Melvin Jones Award (the highest award given to Lions) was presented to Paul Lamas.

At the recent Multiple District Convention in Palm Springs, Scheafer received the highest multiple district award given to a Lion. As former president, Scheafer was also recently honored as volunteer of the year at the Westside Boys and Girls Club.

EXCHANGE CLUB HONORS TEACHERS

Teachers of the year were honored by the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor at a recent luncheon meeting. Nine teachers from middle schools and high schools in the Newport Mesa Unified School District each received the honor and a check for $500 from Exchangite John Uphoff.

The awardees from the middle schools were Rosemary Hines, Ensign, with Principal Gwen Blankenship; Samantha Payne, Corona del Mar; Linda Hawkins, TeWinkle, with Principal Dan Diehl; Jean Shanley, Costa Mesa. Honored from the high schools were Jean Bain, Corona del Mar; Cindy Borisoff, Newport Harbor; Don Ryan, Costa Mesa; Todd Twogood, Estancia; and Laura Rivas, Back Bay.

6 p.m.: The 55-member Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa meets at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club for the Demotion Party for outgoing President Terry Rousselot and the installation of Steve Speer as president.

7 a.m.: The 20-member Costa Mesa Orange Coast Lions Club meets at Mimi’s Cafe.
