Notes from underground

It’s time local emerging talents are heard, and in Costa Mesa there’s a new way for them to vocalize.

Founded by Costa Mesa resident Brett Walker, eVocal may appear to some on the outside as just another fashion boutique. But after entering the shop it proves to be a complete artistic experience.

With apparel, furnishings and albums created by upcoming designers in the community, shoppers are sure to find matchless audio and fashion.

“They create one-of-a-kind products,” Walker said. “No two pieces are alike.”

Walker’s primary goal in opening eVocal was to help upcoming artists and musicians create brands and launch their own lines, bridging the gap between artists and consumers.

“We want to give rise to more underground art and break down current standards that prevent artists from being heard,” Walker said.

Artists of any medium are welcome to promote and produce their works at eVocal.

“We are in support of all forms of expression,” Walker said. “Their identity is their brand.”

Art and band shows will showcase in the space, equipped with a stage. A patio sitting area is in the works for customers to enjoy.

Evocal promotes a number of featured artists including Sheva Sheck, Walker’s wife, who crafts handmade jewelry, hats and shirts.

“It just evolved, starting with shirts,” Sheck said. “I got so into it and it turned out well. I’ve had a love of crafting since I was a Girl Scout.”

Walker dreamt up the idea for eVocal in 2001, and for the past two years the branded production of audio and video has been underway.

“Artists and designers showcase their work under our umbrella,” Walker said. “It’s a mutually beneficial company, and as more align with us the resources shared with the community will become more and more cost effective.”

Walker said he chose Costa Mesa to launch his flagship store because it houses a core community of artists.

“It was a good spot for us to start out,” Walker said. “There’s a community of artists in the area, and so it’s centrally located in an already established base.”

The store is also just three blocks from its recording and production site, Diverse 15 Productions.

Evocal helps with start-up concerns that may pressure new artists, such as how to create a logo, sewing, dying and recording. Walker said he believes eVocal will help make it easier for them.

“We’re really set up for artists to come in and create products,” Walker said. “We work hands-on with artists as they come through, and this is our outlet where you pick up all the products.”

Evocal’s official launch is scheduled for Thursday, but the store, 814 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa, is open for business. dpt.10-bizspot-kt-CPhotoInfoKB1SPLBU20060710j262k0ncKENT TREPTOW / DAILY PILOT(LA)Brett Walker is the founder of eVocal, a store that helps emerging artists and musicians get exposure and gives them an outlet for their work.
