NEWPORT-MESA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PREVIEW

Here are some items the board will consider tonight:

STRATEGIC PLAN

At the 4 p.m. study session, the board will discuss Newport-Mesa’s five-year strategic plan, adopted in 2004, to determine how well the district has progressed toward its goals. The district began the review at its June 27 meeting and hopes to finish this afternoon.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Some aspects of the plan (including expanding access to preschool and improving district technology) are ongoing, while others (including arts and music programs) are in the beginning stages.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

The Boys & Girls Club is planning to build an outdoor sports court on city property, which drains onto the field at neighboring Kaiser Elementary School. Since the new sports facilities, which include hard pavement, would cause additional water runoff, the city is seeking an easement from the district. During the regular meeting tonight, the district will hold a public hearing.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Deputy Supt. Paul Reed, who oversees the facilities end of Newport-Mesa, said the city should have no problem getting an easement.

NEW SUPERINTENDENT

Jeffrey Hubbard, who replaced Robert Barbot as Newport-Mesa superintendent on July 1, will preside at his first board meeting tonight.
