Pony District Tournament
CdM edges Dana Point:
The Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. Corona del Mar 14-year-old Pony All-Stars opened district play with a 5-4 victory over Dana Point on Sunday at Oak Knoll Park in Cypress.
CdM was led by Tommy Colton, who pitched four scoreless innings and had two hits.
Corona del Mar also got three hits from Michael Borchard and a double and a triple from Chase Carlile.
Matt Ruiz singled in the winning run.
CdM also had strong play from Beau Attyah, Parker Werline and Brian Hurst.
The Corona del Mar 14 All-Stars next play Saturday at noon at Oak Knoll Park in a district semifinal game.
Costa Mesa 13-year-old All-Stars eliminated:
The Costa Mesa 13-year-old Pony All-Stars beat Placentia, 4-3, on July 9 at Amerige Park in Fullerton to stay alive in the district tournament, but were eliminated against Dana Point on Tuesday, 15-3, in the consolation semifinals.
Costa Mesa had only four hits against Placentia, but took advantage of four walks and three Placentia errors.
Daniel DeGree, Garrett Hirsch, Brian Waldron Kelly were also stellar. The team advanced further than any previous Costa Mesa Pony 13-year-old All-Stars team.
FOOTBALL
Pop Warner is calling:
Costa Mesa Pop Warner tackle football has openings for players ages 5 to 15 on all teams for the 2006 season.
Equipment is scheduled to be issued Saturday at Costa Mesa High and practices begin Aug. 1.
Divisions consist of Midget, Junior Midget, Pee Wee, Junior Pee Wee, Mighty Mite and a flag football program for ages 5-6.
Games, beginning Sept. 2, are played on Saturdays.
Home games are at Costa Mesa High.
