Laguna Beach Film Society screening

The Laguna Beach Film Society will screen “Pope Dreams” at 7 p.m. Thursday at Laguna South Coast Cinemas, 162 S. Coast Highway.

The film is about a directionless 19-year old boy, Andy Venable, who works in his father’s warehouse and plays drums in a heavy-metal band at night. His only clear goal is to get his sick mother to meet the Pope before she dies.

Temporary sculpture exhibit open to artists

The arts commission is looking for existing sculptures for an 18-month exhibition at Heisler Park near Monument Point, between the ocean and the lawn bowling facility on Cliff Drive south of Myrtle Street.

The sculpture height should not exceed 12 feet and must include a base that can be fastened securely to the existing pad. The city will cover installation and removal costs as well as insurance of the artwork for the exhibition duration.

Submitted artwork must be appropriate to a park setting and be created of durable materials appropriate to an oceanfront environment.

The deadline for proposal submissions is 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4. The competition is open to artists who live, work or exhibit in Laguna Beach. The city has budgeted $1,500 for the exhibition.

Chair appointed to arts commission

Nancy Beverage was named chair of the arts commission at its July 10 meeting.

Beverage succeeds Mike Tauber, who will serve as vice chair, with Terry Smith as treasurer. Other members are Mary Ferguson, Dora Wexell, Joan Corman, Pat Kollenda and alternate Jan Sattler.

‘Postcards’ mural contest announced

Submissions for the 2006 temporary mural competition, “Postcards from Laguna,” are due at 4 p.m. Fri., Sept. 22. The competition is open to artists who are California residents. The city has budgeted $2,000 per mural.

The selected murals will replace existing murals at 364 Ocean Ave. This centrally located site is highly visible in downtown Laguna Beach at the transit connection center for both city transit buses and OCTA. The four murals will be vertically mounted above existing benches.

The proposed design should convey a positive reference to Laguna Beach and may include a simple message, not to exceed 25% of the surface area. Imagery should draw from Laguna Beach’s past, present or future.
