NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP

Here are a few items the council considered Tuesday.

BALLOT MEASURE

Council members voted to place the citizen-backed initiative known as Greenlight II on the November ballot. The initiative would require public votes on some development projects.

Most council members likely won’t support the measure, but since it qualified for the ballot, they had to either adopt it or put it before voters. The council has the power to write arguments for or against the measure but opted not to.

WHAT IT MEANS

City voters will see Greenlight II on their November ballot. Arguments and rebuttals on the initiative will likely be written by citizens’ groups.

MARINES MONUMENT

A new committee will discuss how best to honor fallen Marines in the Camp Pendleton-based battalion the city adopted in 2003. The unit, known as the 1/1, recently lost seven members in Iraq. A separate committee of residents and some city officials has held events to raise money for the families of all the Marines in the battalion.

The council voted 5 to 0 to form the committee, with Councilman Dick Nichols abstaining and Councilman Tod Ridgeway absent. Although they had discussed broadening the memorial to include other military units, the committee’s charge is only to look at a memorial for the 1/1 battalion. A memorial would be paid for with private donations.

WHAT IT MEANS

The seven-member committee will recommend where to put a memorial for fallen Marines in the city’s adopted battalion and what kind of a memorial would best honor them.
