ROUNDUP:May-Treanor, Walsh prevail

HOOVER, Ala. ? Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and her partner, Kerri Walsh, defeated Holly McPeak and Nicole Branagh, 21-15, 21-12, in the final of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals’ Birmingham-Hoover Open beach tournament Sunday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

May-Treanor and Walsh earned their fifth win in the last seven AVP events and their seventh AVP title in 2006.

In the men’s event, Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and partner Sean Rosenthal were defeated in the final, 21-14, 17-21, 15-11, by Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser.

The AVP tour ventures to Chicago next week for a tournament that runs Thursday through Sunday.

Peirsol victorious

AUSTIN, Texas ? Newport Harbor High graduate and Olympic gold medalist Aaron Peirsol won two backstroke events at the Texas Senior Circuit Championship, completed Sunday at the University of Texas.

Peirsol, 22, won the 200-meter back in 2 minutes, 4.19 seconds Saturday.

He won the 100 back in 55.30 Friday.

Peirsol was third in the 200 freestyle (1:51.52) on Friday and sixth in the 100 free Sunday.
