FOR THE RECORD

To say that the Ocean View Little League 10-and-11-year-old All-Star team is making a statement in the 2006 District 62 All-Star Tournament would be, well, an under statement.

In three tournament games leading up to a fourth game it played Wednesday (after the Independent’s deadline), Ocean View had outscored its three previous opponents, 40-0.

Yes, 40-0.

Ocean View began the tournament ? played at Johnson Middle School, the home of Westminster Little League ? on July 1 by routing Seaview, 14-0. A week ago, it whipped Robinwood, 11-0. On Saturday, Ocean View continued its dominance by shutting down Costa Mesa National, 15-0.

“In three district tournament games, we’ve scored 40 runs, allowed none and held teams to a total of three hits,” Ocean View Manager Gorden Gates said. “When your team produces at that kind of level an entire tournament, you’ll usually find yourself playing in a championship game.

“These kids have done everything we’ve asked them to do, and so far they have performed like champions.”

Ocean View played the winner of Tuesday’s elimination game between Seaview and Costa Mesa National on Wednesday for the district title and the right to advance to the Sectional Tournament, which begins on July 21.

Ocean View 11, Robinwood 0

Casey Hayes blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to set Ocean View in motion on its way to a mercy-rule victory over Robinwood.

Hayes’ first-inning homer was only a prelude of what was to come in the fourth inning, when he delivered

another two-run shot as Ocean View increased its lead to 9-0.

Ocean View’s potent offense saw Grant Mayeaux go three for four with a double and three RBI; Jacob Caron triple and single to drive in four runs; Dane Perkins and Dakoda Muta each have two hits; and Zachary Gates, Max Gibbs and Patrick Shearer each single.

Gates pitched a complete game shutout. He allowed just one hit without a walk and struck out 10.

Ocean View 15, Costa Mesa National 0

Grant Mayeaux and Max Gibbs combined to no-hit Costa Mesa National. The game, halted by the mercy rule, lasted four innings.

Casey Hayes hit his fourth home run of the tournament in the top of the first inning, as Ocean View opened up a 3-0 lead. It became 10-0 after Ocean View scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Twelve batters reached the plate in the frame.

Hayes finished the shortened contest with a three-for-four performance that included four RBI. Jacob Caron also went three for four and drove in three runs.

Mayeaux doubled twice and had two RBI; Luke Fall went two for two; and Drew Stanfield, Patrick Shearer and Dakoda Muta each singled.
