Safety tips for you to beat the indoor heat

It sounds as though life has been plenty miserable at the Bayview Landing Senior Apartments this summer, which ? like many homes and apartments in Newport-Mesa ? lacks air-conditioning. Unfortunately, the affordable senior housing project doesn’t lack for senior residents, who are among the most susceptible to the record heat Southern California has been experiencing.

It is not surprising that the affordable housing complex, which opened in January, would be built without the cooling but expensive luxury of air conditioning. After all, how often does it get so hot so close to the ocean? The complex is just a short distance from the Back Bay.

This summer, of course, has been anything but usual. Temperatures throughout Southern California have been incredibly high and have stayed warm even at night. And so residents of Bayview Landing have been feeling the heat like everyone else, and a few of them have complained to the city (and eventually to the Daily Pilot, though ? sadly ? only anonymously since they feared they might be punished for raising the concerns publicly) that the building’s developer, Related Management Co., hasn’t been responsive to their needs.

That, thankfully, has changed, city officials say, and the company is attempting to address the problem, though obviously putting air conditioning in all the apartments is an impossibility.

The solution, clearly, is up to the weather. But, in the meantime, there are precautions we all can take. For everyone, here are a few suggestions on how to handle the indoor heat from the federal Centers for Disease Control:
