The following is from the Laguna Beach City Council meeting of July 18:

DAY LABOR SITE

Eileen Garcia and her husband, George Reviere of Laguna Beach, and out-of-towners Larry Culberston, Sandra Sweet and Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist criticized the City Council for not closing down the Day Labor Center in Laguna Canyon.

Garcia thanked the police department for its actions during a protest on July 14.

Police presence at the site cost the city an estimated $1,200 to $1,500, City Manager Ken Frank said.

RELAY FOR LIFE

Ted Braxton of the American Cancer Society praised the city for its partnership in the Relay for Life fundraiser.

The city provided shuttle bus service for the 2005 event at El Morro Elementary School and will again for this year’s two-day event, Sept. 22 and 23. The shuttle will be funded from savings in the City Council travel budget.

Last year, the Laguna Beach Relay for Life raised $243,000 for cancer research and services. That was the second highest amount raised in Orange County. The city also ranked fourth nationally for online donations, Baxter said.

The city will sponsor a team, as it has in the past. City Clerk Martha Anderson will be the primary co-chair, assisted by Treasurer Laura Parisi. Other co-chairs include Laguna Beach County Water District General Manager Renae Hinchey, Police Chief Michael Sellers, Fire Chief Mike Macey, Laguna Beach Director of Marine Safety Mark Klosterman.

All city employees and relatives are invited to participate. The $150 team entry fee will be paid from savings in the treasurer’s travel budget.
