One man was killed and four others were shot in a Costa Mesa alley Wednesday night in what investigators suspect may have been a gang-related attack, authorities said.

Two of the survivors, one with a chest wound and the other who was shot in an undetermined place, were rushed to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Costa Mesa Fire Capt. Fred Seguin said. The other men, one with a chest wound and one with a thigh wound, were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, Seguin said. Seguin said the wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.

Details were sketchy Wednesday night as investigators interviewed witnesses, but police said they suspect it may have been gang-related, Lt. Loren Wyrick said. A gunman opened fire at about 8:20 p.m. in an alley of the 1300 block of Baker Street.

Police are looking for a man who fled in a silver Chevrolet Impala. He was light-skinned, had a shaved head, a mustache and a goatee beard. He appeared to be in his 20s, Wyrick said. All of the victims appeared to be in their 20s, he added.

The area where the shooting occurred is largely residential and is considered a quiet neighborhood, Wyrick said.
