Huntington Beach Police are investigating all city parks after a 2-year-old girl cut herself on a piece of glass in a way her mother believes was put there intentionally to harm someone, police said.

Authorities could not confirm whether the glass was put there on purpose because the mother had removed it before police began their investigation.

At 6:15 p.m. Monday, police received a call regarding the young girl who cut her foot while playing in the park at 9700 Levee St., police said. The mother told police the cut was not severe.

The girl’s mother, who cleared the seven to 10 fragments of glass away, told police that the shards were placed in holes on playground equipment in a way she believed was meant to cause harm, Lt. Craig Junginger said. It was unknown what sort of playground equipment the glass was reported to be on.

Using a sand screen, the public works department found 10 additional pieces in sand around the equipment, officials said.

Workers in all south side parks on Wednesday used the screen to check for more glass. The rest of the city’s parks are scheduled to be combed later this week, city spokeswoman Laurie Payne said.

“We haven’t had this happen in one of our parks for years,” Payne said. “But it’s always a good idea to be cautious and check things out.”

Park department employees are on the alert to look for similar safety hazards.

“From what I understand, each park gets checked once a week already for safety issues,” Junginger said.

Police say there are no suspects or witnesses at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.

“We are looking at this as an isolated incident,” Junginger said. “No other reports have come in, and the Public Works department already went through all the other parks.”
