Search continues for Costa Mesa shooter

Costa Mesa police on Monday continued to search for clues in the Aug. 2 shooting that left one man dead and four others wounded., Police said they were considering every angle, including the possibility it was a hate or gang-related crime.

“We’re not ruling out anything, but we’re not saying it’s gang-related, race-related ? we’re not ruling it out, but we’re looking at the possibility that it had nothing to do with race or gangs,” Det. Sgt. Don Holford said. “There’s no clear answer, but ? we’re going down every path and every lead to its conclusion to ensure whoever is responsible for the crime is brought to justice.”

Israel Maciel, 23, was shot to death Aug. 2 in an alley behind apartment buildings in the 1300 block of West Baker Street in Costa Mesa.

The other victims ? Ivan Barcenas, 18, of Costa Mesa, Edgar Eduardo Perez, 18, of Costa Mesa, Carlos Gutierrez, 25, of Huntington Beach and a 17-year-old boy ? have been released from the hospital.

Police are looking for a suspect who was described as a man in his 20s with white or light skin, a shaved head and goatee. The night of the shooting, the man drove away from the scene in a Chevrolet Impala after firing multiple shots out of the car.
