BRIEFS: MAY-TREANOR FIFTH

Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and beach volleyball partner Kerri Walsh were defeated in the quarterfinals of the A1 Grand Slam tournament completed Saturday in Klagenfurt, Austria.

May-Treanor and Walsh were defeated by eventual champions Tian Jia and Wang Jie from China, 21-19, 22-20, to settle for a share of fifth place.

The Chinese duo defeated top-seeded Juliana Felisberta and Larissa Franca of Brazil, 20-22, 21-16, 15-11, in the title match.

In the men’s bracket of the same Federation Internationale de Volleyball tournament, Costa Mesa resident Mike Lambert, playing with Stein Metzger, shared fifth place.

Lambert and Metzger fell to Brazilians Ricardo and Emanuel in the quarterfinals.

The Brazilians were defeated in the final by Americans Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.

EX-ANTEATERS CHIP IN

Former UCI All-American Jeff Powers scored three goals to help lead Team USA to an 11-4 win over France to finish fifth in the FINA World League Super Final tournament Sunday.

Goalie Genai Kerr, another former Anteater All-American, had three saves for the Americans.

Former UCI All-American and two-time Olympian Ryan Bailey netted two goals while Rick Merlo added one in Team USA’s 14-13 loss to Australia on Saturday.
