On Aug. 26, the Sons of the American Legion, Newport Harbor Squadron 291 will present the ninth annual Blues on the Bay music festival.

This event will take place at the American Legion Hall, at 215 15th Street in Newport Beach, with the scheduled artists to perform between 11a.m. and 9 p.m.

The cost of admittance is $25 per person, with food and drinks available at an additional cost.

The bands playing include Rodger Baldwin, Blue Voodoo, Slimtones, Taryn Donath, Tom Harkenrider/Lynwood Slim and Flattop Tom and His Jump Cats.

Proceeds from the Blues on the Bay are donated to charity, according to Matt Parsons, Commander of Squad 291. Over the past eight years, the Sons of the American Legion have raised and distributed more than $100,000 in charitable donations from the Blues on the Bay. Some of the organizations they have assisted include the Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation, Southern California Special Olympics, American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, Children’s Miracle Network, The Boy/Girl Scouts, the Long Beach Veterans Hospital, Hoag Hospital and the World War II Memorial Fund.

HARBOR MESA LIONS HONORS MEMBERSImmediate Past President of the Harbor Mesa Lions, Carol Van Holt, recently presented club members with pins and awards for their achievements in the past year.

“This was an outstanding year for our club and our members worked hard to achieve these honors,” Van Holt said. “Our club outdid itself and gave more to our community than ever before, putting in almost 2,500 service hours.”

Members received pins for attendance, chairing projects, board positions and various contributions to the club and community. Two members received the Harry J. Aslan Fellowship Award, which honors members who have contributed to the community and support the Student Speaker Contest, held each year.

They were Lou Bolick-Taylor and Ann Iverson. These two members have contributed numerous hours to the Lions Sight and Hearing Van, Flag Day and Spencer’s Treasures projects.

Awarded the club’s Lion of the Year was Joan Parks, who chaired many of the clubs fundraisers and projects, was the club secretary and also received the District Secretary of the Year Award.

The club also made a donation to Angels Charity in Van Holt’s name, which she designated as her favorite charity of the year.

KIWANIS GOLF TOURNAMENT OPEN TO PUBLICCosta Mesa Kiwanis Club’s fourth annual golf tournament will be held on Sept. 18 at the Mesa Linda Golf Course, according to Charles Markel.

First tee times are at 10:30 a.m. and a scramble format will be used. Entry fee of $100.00 includes golf, cart, range balls, tee prizes and a great meal to follow at the Newport Rib Co.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB GOLF TOURNAMENTThe Boys and Girls Club Westside Costa Mesa will be holding a golf tournament on Oct. 2. Board member Mike Scheafer challenges all of the area’s service clubs to participate and within the tournament, have a competition between the various service clubs. The service club with the lowest score would win a perpetual trophy, Scheafer said.

AAUW TEAAmerican Assn. of University Women is holding a new membership tea at a private home on Aug. 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Newport Beach.

AAU members and prospective members are invited to attend. The schedule of monthly general meetings for the year will be presented and interest group leaders will describe the wide variety of activities offered.
