Five seek three seats on school board

Five candidates will run for three seats in November’s school board race, with only one incum- bent seeking re-election, according to the Registrar of Voters.

Board members Bob Whalen and William Landsiedel failed to file papers by the deadline, which was extended to Aug. 16 because the incumbents originally failed to file by the first deadline of Aug. 11.

Landsiedel — appointed to K Turner’s seat following her death in April — had previously stated he would not seek reelection.

Whalen, the current board president, was unavailable for comment.

Incumbent Betsy Jenkins filed her papers by the deadline, in addition to four other candidates.

Theresa O’Hare, president of Performing Arts Boosters, and retired architect Jeff Elghanayan have also submitted their papers. Both withdrew from consideration for the Turner seat appointment in June when it became apparent that anyone appointed to the board would face opposition from critics of the board.

The other two candidates seeking seats on the board are former Laguna Beach High School PTA President Ketta Brown and UPS executive Kelly Cornwell, who had also sought the Turner seat.

Elected board members serve four-year terms. Current board members Jan Vickers and El Hathaway are not up for reelection this term.

Those who may have withdrawn or failed to complete all the paperwork may not be reflected in this list.

The final list of candidates is available on the Registrar’s website or by calling the Registrar of Voters at (949) 567-7600.
