Pop Warner Football opening day is Saturday

Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football and Cheer will kick off its 2006 season Saturday with opening-day ceremonies at the Edison High football field.

The chapter will hold a pancake breakfast beginning at 7 a.m., followed by official opening-day ceremonies and player introductions at 9 a.m.

The festivities will conclude with Huntington Beach teams taking on teams from South Coast and La Habra in scrimmages that begin at 10:30 a.m.

Food, music, carnival-style games and vendor booths, as well as more than $2,000 in raffle prizes and basket-bidding, will be offered throughout the event.

The first games of the 2006 season will be played Sept. 2.

H.B. Vikings baseball club holding tryouts

The H.B. Vikings Baseball Club is evaluating new players on an individual basis for the upcoming fall 2006 and spring 2007 seasons.

As of Sept. 1, the club team, which is entering its third year, will compete in the 12-year-old division. The team is open to any player who turned 12 after May 1, 2006 or will be 12 by April 30, 2007.

World Surfing Games names judging panel

The judging panel has been announced for the International Surfing Assn. World Surfing Games that will take place Oct. 14 to 22 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The panel represents 14 ISA-member nations and is led by head judges Glen Elliott of Australia, Craig Hoshide of the U.S.A. and bodyboard head judge Francisco Garritano of Brazil. International, team and ISA-invited judges are Duane Avenell (Australia), Jordao Bailo (Brazil), Jonothan Channing (South Africa), Nino Lauro (Peru), Stanley Sham Koua (Tahiti), Antonio Fernandez (Spain), Bruno Truch (France), Miguel Yecerra (Venezuela), Yeffrey Rojas (Costa Rica), Joanne Hillman (United Kingdom), Cirilo Yagual Ramirez (Ecuador), Fernando Arca (Argentina), Shogo Takenaka (Japan) and Chip Hall (USA).

The 2006 ISA World Surfing Games, organized by Surfing America, will attract the top surfers from around the world who will compete on behalf of their respective countries.

The World Surfing Games began in 1964 at Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia.
